Christian Retailing concludes CR Best awards

Christian Retailing magazine has ended its Christian Retailing's Best awards program. The CR Best awards were originally called the Retailers Choice Awards. The awards program was launched in 2000.

The CR Best awards celebrated the kingdom impact of products sold by Christian retailers in their stores. Christian Retailing is grateful for those companies and authors who have supported the awards program through the years. We are also thankful for those who have taken the time to vote for what they deemed to be the best products sold in Christian retail stores.

Adam Hamilton's The Call was awarded the 2016 Christian Retailing's Best Award for Bible Reference/Study material. The special announcement was held at a ceremony during the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 27th.

Christian retailers, publishers, church store managers and volunteers—in short, anyone actively engaged in the Christian products industry—were eligible to vote. Voters were asked to judge the nominations on their impact, including their ability to speak to people's hearts and evoke emotion; open people's minds to new ways of thinking; and encourage and affirm Christlike living.

Introduced in 2001, the awards—formerly known as the Retailers Choice Awards—have been increasingly acknowledged as an important way of recognizing some of the most significant new, life-changing products in the Christian retail industry.

Lake Mary, Fla. (June 27, 2016)—Winners of the 2016 Christian Retailing's Best awards were announced Monday morning, June 27, at the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) in Cincinnati. B&H; Publishing Group was the runaway winner with 13 awards this year, while Abingdon Press won five awards and both Lighthouse Christian Products and Baker Publishing Group won four.

Dr. David Ireland presented the awards in a press conference room at the Duke Energy Convention Center. Christine D. Johnson, editor of Christian Retailing magazine, welcomed the guests.

Nominating companies submitted books, Bibles, gifts, DVDs and more in this year's competition. In each category, three finalists were named. One category—Christian Living: Spiritual Growth—had two winners because the category was so large.

Official rules for 2016 Christian Retailing's Best awards

Products nominated for the 2016 Christian Retailing's Best awards must have been released and on sale in stores in 2015, with the exception of product nominations in the Backlist category. Products not sold in stores are disqualified.
Nomination fee is $60 per nominated item. Those nominating (authors, public relations firms, publishers and other suppliers) may take advantage of the Early Bird discount (ends Feb 15). For every five products entered by the Early Bird deadline, a sixth product may be entered for free.
Nominations must include clear Christian content, message or worldview. In the Gift categories, "inspirational" items not specifically Christian will be considered, although those contrary to orthodox Christianity will be excluded. Companies billed for products that are not accepted will receive their entry fee back in full.
Each product is to be entered in one category only. All Spanish-language products are to be entered in the Spanish category. All audio products are to be entered under Audio.
We reserve the right to revise or eliminate categories after the nomination period has ended. If a particular category is deemed to have too few products entered, suppliers will be contacted to move their products to another appropriate category, and the category with too few nominations will be closed.
Voting: Along with Christian retailers, others who work in the industry are invited to vote, including authors, publishers, literary agents, gift company employees and book packagers. Voting is not open to the general public. Nominating companies shall not canvass for votes.
Voting will be conducted using an online ballot. Products are to be judged on their impact, including their ability to:

  • speak to people's hearts and evoke emotion
  • open people's minds to new ways of thinking
  • encourage and affirm Christlike living

Christian retailers' votes will be weighted to maximize their impact.
Voting details will appear in the February-March print/digital issue of Christian Retailing (Click here to sign up for the digital issue.) and in the Christian Retailing Update e-newsletter (Click here to sign up for Update.).
Results will be verified by an independent firm of certified public accountants and are expected to be announced at the International Christian Retail Show in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Retailers Choice Awards winners announced

The votes are in and Christian retailers across the country have chosen their favorite new products of the year. Thirty-three winners of Christian Retailing's 2010 Retailers Choice Awards have been announced as the annual honors mark their 10th year.

Filmmaker brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick are the big personal winners, sharing three awards for Best DVD/Video: Movie with Fireproof(Provident Films), Best Book: Audio, The Love Dare (Brilliance Audio) and Best Book: Relationships, The Love Dare Day by Day (B&H; Books/B&H; Publishing Group).

California pastor Francis Chan also features, taking Best DVD/Video: Book/Bible Study for Crazy Love (David C. Cook), based on his 2008 title of the same name, while his 2009 follow-up, Forgotten God (Cook) takes one of two prizes for Best Book: Christian Living.

The largest of 32 categories in this year's awards, Christian Living sees two winners this year, the other David Jeremiah's Living With Confidence in a Chaotic World (Thomas Nelson).

Leading the winning suppliers is Zondervan with six trophies, four of them for Bibles. The publisher's new faith-based Berenstain Bears series takes Best Children's Fiction with Jan & Mike Berenstain's The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks.

Nelson wins five awards, including Best Catholic/Liturgical for Joan Chittister's The Liturgical Year and Best Backlist for Emerson Eggerich's 2005 Love & Respect. Tyndale House Publishers earns four trophies, while Baker Publishing Group and Harvest House Publishers joins Cook with two each.

Since they were launched in 2001, the Retailers Choice Awards have been increasingly acknowledged as an important way of recognizing some of the most significant new life-changing products in the Christian retail industry.

Products nominated in the competition were judged on the impact they have had on staff and customers. Owners, managers, staff and volunteers at Christian retail stores were asked to judge the 277 nominations products released during 2009 on the impact they had on staff and customers, including their ability to speak to hearts and evoke emotion, open minds to new ways of thinking and encourage and affirm Christlike living.

Finalists were announced in early April, prior to winner's presentations April 22 at The Gathering 2010 at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky. The results were independently verified.

Finalists Announced for Best Christian Books of 2010

By Victor Anderson, Christian Post Correspondent | TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 2010

The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association and Christian Retailing magazine have narrowed down the year's best Christian reads from the hundreds of titles that came out over the past year.

Both groups recently announced the finalists for their year's best book awards, which  Christian Retailing said are a "way of recognizing some of the most significant new life-changing products in the Christian retail industry."
Christian Retailing's nominated products were judged on their impact on consumers and were evaluated on the way they affirmed Christ-like living, spoke to hearts, and opened minds

ECPA, meanwhile, took into account both editorial and sales accomplishments in its judging. The 2009 award winner, the ESV Study Bible, had sold over 180,000 copies five months prior to being named Christian Book of the Year. The study Bible was produced by a group of 95 Bible scholars.
"We have a terrific selection of Christian Book Awards finalists this year, representing a broad base of genres and topics," reported ECPA President Mark Kuyper, whose association has partnered with Christianity Today Inc. and national retail outlets to promote the award winners to consumers.
"ECPA will continue to be aggressive in presenting the award-winners to media, bookstores and consumers, enhancing the value of this honor for these finest titles of the year," he added.

Winners of the ECPA awards and Christian Retailing's will be announced at their respective upcoming conferences.
The 2010 Retailers Choice Awards will be given out during Christian Retailing's The Gathering, scheduled for April 21-23 in Louisville. A week and a half later, category winners for ECPA's 2010 Christian Book Awards will be announced at the Executive Leadership Summit in Nashville.

The complete lists of finalists are available, respectively, at ecpa.org and retailerschoiceawards.com.

Retailers Choice Awards 2007

Seventh annual Retailers Choice Awards winners announced

The 2007 Christian Retailing Retailers Choice Awards were announced July 9 in Atlanta at the International Christian Retail Show, with Zondervan winning the most awards in the seventh annual competition. This year, suppliers nominated more than 170 products in 25 book, music and gift categories.

Zondervan received six awards for products such as Rob Bell’s DVD/video Rich in the “NOOMA” series and the Archaeological Study Bible. Audio Bible Inspired by…The Bible Experience overcame other Audiobook finalists The Message Remix Complete (NavPress) and Philip Yancey’s popular book Prayer (Zondervan). However, in another category, Personal Growth/Prayer, Yancey’s Prayer won the award.

Sheila Walsh was the only individual winner this year to be honored with two awards—one for a children’s book and one for a Bible, both from Thomas Nelson, which won four awards in total.

Products were nominated by suppliers and voted on by retailers, with votes compiled by independent certified public accountants Osburn, Henning and Co. of Orlando, Fla.

Nominated products, released during 2006, were judged on the impact they have had on staff and customers, including their ability to speak to hearts and evoke emotion, open minds to new ways of thinking and encourage and affirm Christlike living.

Retailers Choice Awards 2006

2006 Retailers Choice Awards: Official Rules

Products nominated for the Retailers Choice Awards 2006 must have been published and released in 2005, and must include clear Christian content, message or worldview. In the gift category, "inspirational" items not specifically Christian will be considered, although those contrary to orthodox Christianity (such as New Age) will not be included. Entry fees for products not accepted will be returned in full. Retailers will be asked to judge nominations on the impact they have had on staff and customers, including their ability to: a)speak to people's hearts and evoke emotion, b)open people's minds to new ways of thinking and c)encourage and affirm Christlike living.

A full list of nominations will be published in the May 1 and May 15 issues of Christian Retailing magazine, along with retailer ballot forms. The form also will be online at www.retailerschoiceawards.com.

Nominating companies shall not canvass retailers for votes; ballots that have been solicited by suppliers will be disqualified. The deadline for retailer voting is May 26.

Retailers Choice Awards 2004

Retailers Choice Awards Sees Stars

Christian Retailing magazine's Retailers Choice Awards were handed out last night at a gala event in Atlanta, with many special guests, great music and laughter.

Host Pat Williams, author and Senior Vice President of the Orlando Magic, kept the two-hour show moving between music from Katie Giguere, Myrrh, Martha Munizzi and headliner Kelly Minter. Music ranged from inspirational to worshipful to acoustic pop.

Chick-Fil-A founder Truett Cathy, a presenter, asked the crowd, "What do cows say?" to which the crowd promptly yelled back the fast food chain's popular advertising campaign, "Eat more chicken!" Cathy gave away a copy of his book It's Better to Build Boys than Mend Men (Cumberland House) to all attendees.

Stephen Strang presented a VIP (Visionary Industry Pioneer) Award to Robert Walker, who launched Christian Bookseller 49 years ago. The magazine, since renamed Christian Retailing, is now owned by Strang Communications.

Award presenter Smokey Robinson, who has a gospel album releasing titled Food for the Spirit, affirmed his Christian faith to the supplier and retail crowd, noting he is excited to share his faith through his new music.
